S OF PAPERS Twenty-first Annual Albert L. Tester Memorial Symposium, 11-12 April 1996 The Albert L. Tester Memorial Symposium is held in honor of Professor Albert L. Tester, who, at the time of his death in 1974, was senior professor of zoology at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. The faculty and students of the Department of Zoology proposed an annual symposium of student research papers as a means of honoring, in a continuing and active way, Dr. Tester's lively encouragement of student research in a broad range of fields in biology. Papers reporting original research in all aspects of biology, solicited from graduate students at the University, are presented at the spring-semester symposium. Income from contributions to the Albert L. Tester Memorial Fund of the University of Hawai'i Foundation provides two prizes for the best papers. Judges include representatives of the Department of Zoology faculty, winners from the preceding symposium, and a distinguished scholar from another university, who also presents a major symposium address. In 1996 George L. Gabor Mikl0s~0f-the-Neur:osciences Institute,_La_JalIa, _Californlikpar1!gipated i~J:h~ symposium. In 1997 Stephen A. Wainwright, Professor of Zoology, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, participated in the symposium. Efficiency Analysis of an Asian Shrimp Industry: Malaysian Shrimp Culture

Malaysian white shrimp (P. vannamei) aquaculture: an application of stochastic frontier analysis on technical efficiency
Shrimp aquaculture is playing a vital role in Malaysian agriculture, especially its increasing contribution to economic growth. White shrimp aquaculture is not only the key player in brackish water shrimp aquaculture but also the largest contributor to Malaysian shrimp aquaculture. This study estimates technical efficiency and investigates factors affecting technical inefficiency of Malaysian w...
متن کاملRemoval of heavy metals and suspended solids from shrimp culture wastewater in Bushehr Province, using cold plasma technology
The present work has been carried out to investigate the removal efficiency of active oxygen, produced by using APGP cold plasma sterilizer, on the heavy metals of Hg, Pb and Total Suspended Solids in discharge wastewater of Shif shrimp culture complex and Persian Gulf SPF shrimp research center in Bushehr province. The maximum of removal efficiency for Hg and Pb were 66% and 74%, respectively...
متن کاملSome Aspects of the Shrimp Farming Industry in China: Constraints and Priorities
There are about 100 penaeid shrimp species in China’s coastal waters, of which a dozen Penaeus spp. and Metapenaeus spp. have commercial value (Liu 1989a). The main species cultured in China are Penaeus chinensis, P. monodon, P. japonicus, P. merguinsis and P. penicillatus. Chinese shrimp farms are distributed along almost 18,000 km of coastline from Hainan Province in the tropics to Liaoning P...
متن کاملShrimp Disease Control: Past, Present and Future
In the period from 1970-1990, the worldwide shrimp industry was dependent on post larvae (PL) from wild sources. Grow-out systems were relatively simple, water exchange rates were high and few disease agents were known. Diagnostic capability was low and antibiotics and chemical use was common. Explosive increase in global shrimp cultivation was accompanied by viral pandemics starting around 198...
متن کاملA logistic regression of risk factors for disease occurrence on Asian shrimp farms.
Serious shrimp-disease outbreaks have reduced shrimp production and slowed industry growth since 1991. This paper tests factors such as farm sitting and design, and farm-management practices for relationships with disease occurrence. Logistic regression is used to analyze farm-level data from 3951 shrimp farms in 13 Asian countries. Disease occurrence is modeled as a 0-1 variable where 1 = dise...
